AVAILABLE FIELD GRADE KNIVES Starting in 2012:
The knives you will find listed here occasionally are what we call our field grade knives. We do not take orders on them. We make small batches of them when we have a break from orders. These knives are still totally made here in our shop and are heat treated the same way as our catalog knives, but we simplify them and streamline the process by not having to do quotes and do a bunch of options. Most of them will be carbon steel because the heat treat process is shorter than stainless steel and it is easier to work. Sheaths will be simple kydex or leather. I will leave the pictures of the different batches we do so you can let us know if you would like another batch made like that. That way we will know what you are interested in the most. ![]() ![]() FGBT (full size)
The carbon steel ones have been differentially heat treated - edge is harder than the spine. It is a flat saber grind with a convex edge. The sheath supplied with it is Kydex with a large TekLok for vertical and horizontal carry. You can also get a brown leather vertical carry sheath with it as an option. You can also get the leather attachments for either sheath. The Video below will give you a little better look at them and little more info: Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEbBmpnyq7I&list=UUNYcakcFzLLAJpYbNcsfrxw&index=1&feature=plcp ![]() ![]() FGBT (small size) I made two of these smaller Field Grade BTs with 4" blades that are approximately 1 1/8" wide at widest point and .156 thick. Overall length is around 8 1/4". It is a flat saber grind with a convex edge. These are 440C stainless steel. The different colorations and wet spots on the handles are caused from the WD40 that I spray in the Kydex sheaths to protect the blade. It washes off with mineral spirits, but hand oils are going to make it darker when you use it. Sometimes I just spray the whole thing down with WD40 to begin with. It will eventually dry when you leave it sitting for a day or so and have a different shade to it - just the way Micarta is.
